Ammon was founded in 1888. It was originally named South Iona because the locals were a dependent ward of the Iona Ward. (A Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saint congregation in Iona, Idaho). In 1889 the area was given its own ward. The bishop of the ward (Arthur M. Rawson) decided to rename the area Ammon after a prominent figure in the Book of Mormon. Around 1930 the village of Ammon had 270 inhabitants. The city was officially incorporated on the tenth of October in 1905. Then in 1963, it was considered a Second Class City by Idaho State law.
